Big Family Tour Recap

Little Elliot and I just got back from an AMAZING two week tour. We traveled to six states plus D.C. to share our new book, Little Elliot, Big Family! Folks in our big Macmillan family did a great job connecting Elliot and me with welcoming schools and stores.

BigFamilyTour_map2

Though the trip was wonderful for many reasons, there’s one highlight that I have to share. Early on the tour, a little girl came up to me after the reading and proudly announced, “I’m adopted!” Her big smile informed me that she connected with the book. Elliot’s story was her story. I was touched. But. It didn’t stop there! I met many other adopted kids, families with adoptees, and one librarian who has a recently adopted student who keeps checking out the book. While I was writing Big Family, it occurred to me that this story is all about inclusion. I am so grateful for these folks sharing their inclusion stories with me. My heart has been very full because of it.

Welcome to Little Elliot's Family!

Little Elliot, Big Window, Take THREE!

Little Elliot has moved back into his cushy window at Books of Wonder! His first stay was last year for the launch of Little Elliot, Big City, and then again for Christmas. Now, he’s back, and he brought a few friends, or I should say, his BIG FAMILY! Come celebrate the release of Little Elliot, Big Family with me this Sunday, October 4, at 18 W 18th St, between 5th and 6th Avenues, from 3-5 PM! There will be a book reading, presentation about how I work, drawing demo, and of course CUPCAKES, along with some cheesy treats! Meanwhile, I thought I’d share the “making of” our Mouse party…

I am very blessed to have a big family of crafty folks here in NYC. In this pic you can see Katrina, Les, Sigal, Emilie, Isabel, and Dan making mice out of socks and pipe cleaners, while Ruth is patiently trimming mounted print outs of mouse portraits from the book’s endpapers.

I got the idea for these mice from Continue reading

The Polka Dot Express: Little Elliot’s Big Adventure!

On October 6, Little Elliot’s adventures continue in Little Elliot, Big Family. There have been so many people who have helped get Little Elliot into the hands of young readers – I like to consider those people Elliot’s BIG EXTENDED FAMILY.

This Fall, Little Elliot is going on a BIG adventure across the country to visit his big family! And by Elliot, I mean the adorable MerryMakers plush! Elliot will travel from school to school in a box filled with small treasures. Because we know how much Elliot loves small treasures.

Little Elliot's Treasures

Elliot loves small treasures, and now he wants to share them with your class! Help grow his collection and see what other classes have added too!

All participating classrooms will receive a copy of Little Elliot, Big Family. Once Elliot arrives, we hope you will add a small treasure to his box and add your city to a map he’ll travel with before sending him along to his next destination!

There are only so many classrooms Elliot can visit in a year, so sign up now by submitting your information here! You’ll receive more information from Macmillan soon after signing up.

Meanwhile, happy treasure hunting!

Celebrating My Big Kidlit Family

LittleElliot BlogTour

I may be a bit late on the whole 2014 recap, but since the cover of Little Elliot, Big Family is being revealed this week, I’m taking some time to reflect. In the new book, Elliot learns that sometimes family can have a broader definition: it can include anyone you love. 2014 was much more than my picture book debut, it was the making of my kidlit family! Meanwhile, I want to share a sneak peek at some of the sketches from the second book!

The Writing Process – Author Blog Tour – Mike Curato

Hi! I’m Mike Curato, and I am so excited to be a part of this author blog tour!

Me & my work.

Me & my work.

First off, thanks to Fred Koehler for passing the baton to me. I met Fred an an SCBWI Winter Conference several years ago. We enjoyed some yummy Chinese food together and we’ve been Facebook author-illustrator compadres ever since. If you haven’t already picked up a copy of his debut book, How to Cheer Up Dad, then you’re in luck because it will make a great Father’s Day gift!

Fred

What am I currently working on?

LittleElliot_coverWell, I am busy promoting my upcoming debut title, Little Elliot Big City, and in the process of finishing up my second book in the series, Little Elliot, Big Family. The first book comes out on August 26th, and I can hardly wait! I just received my first hardcover copy, and it’s so magical having it in my hands. I keep knocking on the cover to make sure it’s real!

Little Elliot is a polka-dotted elephant living in NYC circa 1940. It’s hard being a little guy in such a big place, and I think that makes him really relatable for kids. A new friend comes along though, and life gets a lot happier, and maybe a little easier. Little Elliot will be printed in English, German, Hebrew, Mandarin, and Korean! Elliot has been a character that I’ve been developing for many years, and I’m so excited to be able to share him with the world.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?
